Summary of Curriculum Vitae

Karolina Akinsoglou was born in Patras, Greece. She studied Medicine at the University of Patras, from which she graduated in 2006. She completed her Ph.D. in the field of molecular and cellular immunobiology of malaria at Imperial College London (awarded in 2011) and gained specialized clinical experience in tropical diseases at the Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Unit (Lister Unit) at Northwick Park Hospital, London (2006–2010).
At the same time, she was trained in the application of modern teaching methods (Problem-Based Learning) with autonomous teaching responsibilities for first- and second-year medical students at Imperial College London, and actively participated in the supervision of research projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Biology at the same university (2007–2010).

She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and her specialization in Infectious Diseases at the University General Hospital of Patras (2017), and pursued further training in infections in gynecological and obstetric patients at the University Hospital of Antwerp in Belgium (2024).
She has an extensive teaching record at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including independent course coordination and supervision of master's theses and doctoral dissertations.

Her research interests focus primarily on infections, particularly sepsis and systemic inflammation, HIV, COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance, and infections in gynecology and obstetrics. Her work has been presented at international conferences and has received multiple honors and awards from international scientific societies. She has published extensively in reputable journals with significant international impact (>10,000 citations, h-index: 38, i10-index: 77).

Additionally, she has actively participated in numerous international multicenter studies and continues research in the field of HIV infection, funded through competitive programs (e.g., University of Patras Fellowship Program "K. Karatheodoris 2018," Gilead Grants Program "Asklepios" etc). She has repeatedly received excellence-based scholarships from the European AIDS Clinical Society, European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, International AIDS Society etc. She has served as a reviewer for high-impact international infectious disease journals and has been a member of organizing and scientific committees, as well as an invited speaker at numerous local and national internal medicine and infectious disease conferences. She is an active member of many national and international scientific societies (IDSA, ASM, ESCMID, GMC, ISIDOG, Hellenic Society for Infectious Diseases in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Hellenic Society for Infectious Diseases, Hellenic Society for Internal Medicine, etc.) and has served as a board member in a number of those

Alongside her teaching and research activities, she practices clinical work at the Department of Internal Medicine and the Infectious Diseases Unit at the University General Hospital of Patras, overseeing inpatient and outpatient care, including COVID-19 patients (2020–2022) and HIV patients, and participating in the training of internal medicine and infectious disaese residents. In 2017, she was unanimously elected Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Patras, assumed her duties in February 2018, and since 2022 has been serving at the rank of Associate Professor.
