Michail (Michael) I. Papafaklis, M.D., Ph.D., FESC is an Interventional Cardiologist and currently works as Assistant Professor of Medicine - Interventional Cardiology at the Medical School, University of Patras and the University Hospital of Patras.

Dr Papafaklis received his MD degree and also his PhD diploma from the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. He completed his Cardiology training at the University Hospital of Ioannina. He has been trained in Interventional Cardiology at Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, UK, and is fully certified in Interventional Cardiology by the European Association of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (EAPCI) and the Hellenic Ministry of Health.
His primary clinical expertise in Interventional Cardiology includes complex high-risk indicated percutaneous coronary intervention (CHIP-PCI), the assessment of coronary physiology (epicardial arteries [FFR, iFR, RFR, DFR] and microcirculation [CFR, IMR, vasospasm testing]), intracoronary imaging (intravascular ultrasound [IVUS/IVUS HD] and optical coherence tomography [OCT]), and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

Dr Papafaklis has worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in USA, and he joined the George D. Behrakis Cardiovascular Research Fellowship in 2011. In the past, he also was a visiting scientist in the Interventional Department of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC in the Netherlands.

Dr Papafaklis has authored more than 110 peer-reviewed papers (citations >4500) and he has presented several abstracts (>100) in international cardiology conferences. He was the winner of the distinguished Young Investigator Award by the European Society of Cardiology (2011), and he has received awards of original research from the Academy of Athens (2013) and the Hellenic Cardiological Society (2014).
