Summary of Curriculum Vitae

Stavros Kakkos MD, MSc, PhD, RVT is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the University of Patras Medical School, Patras, Greece. He studied Medicine at the same University between 1984 and 1990 and graduated with honours and at the top of his class. In 1994 he received the ECFMG certificate. In 1995 he was awarded with a Doctorate in Medicine by the University of Patras, while in 1997 he completed his training in General Surgery at the University Hospital of Patras, Greece. In 1998 he was awarded with the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation scholarship to study for the degree of Master of Science in Vascular Technology and Medicine, in London, UK. This degree was awarded by the University of London in 1999. Between 1999-2003 he performed research with the Department of Vascular Surgery, Imperial College, in London, UK, towards a PhD, which was granted by the University of London in 2004. During 2004-2007 he continued his clinical training in Vascular Surgery, in England and at the Henry Ford Hospital, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. In 2008, Professor Kakkos joined the staff of Patras University. During his long career he has received numerous awards and distinctions for his clinical and research activities and participated in over 5,000 procedures. He has so far participated in 15 multicentre studies, authored over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and contributed to over 338 conference presentations and lectures, and 22 book chapters. Professor Kakkos sits on the Editorial Board of a number of journals, including International Angiology (2020 impact factor 2.1), Hellenic Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (2020 impact factor 6.4), Cochrane Vascular (2020 impact factor 12.0) and Frontiers in Surgery, Vascular section (2020 impact factor 2.6). During the last 16 years he has participated in 16 guidelines and consensus documents, while he was a member of the Guidelines Committee of the European Society of Vascular Surgery (ESVS) between 2013-2022. In July 2022 his scientific work had received over 11,100 citations with a Hirst factor of 48 in Scopus, and over 17,100 and 56, respectively, in Google Scholar. He has been a Secretary General of the Medical Society of Western Greece and Peloponnesus (2016-2019). He has also a collaboration for several years with Imperial College London in the UK.
