METHODOLOGY

This course is taught through lecturing (held at lecture theatre) and practical training at the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Clinic.

OBJECTIVES

  • Otology: Anatomy and Physiology of the ear. Diseases of external ear (foreign bodies – impacted ear wax – external otitis, otomycosis – traumatic perforations of the tympanum – acute otitis media). Secretory otitis – Chronic otitis media – Complications of purulent otitis media. Tumors of the middle ear (paraganglioma - cancer). Otology - hearing loss (hypacusia) - causes of different types of hearing loss - acoustic trauma. Temporal bone fractures - pediatric hearing loss -    tinnitus - acoustic trauma. Temporal bone fractures - pediatric hearing loss - tinnitus, vertigo - nystagmus - Meniere’s disease -acoustic neuroma.
  • Rhinology: Anatomy of nose and paranasal sinuses. Epistaxis, nasal injuries – nasal deformities causing respiratory distress – choanal atresia. Rhinitis (acute - chronic - allergic - vasomotor – drug-induced).
    Nasal polyps. Paranasal sinusitis. Treatment of paranasal sinusitis. Complications of paranasal sinusitis. Malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses, prosopalgias.
  • Pharyngology: Anatomy and physiology of the pharynx. Adenoids and tonsils related diseases. Pharyngeal abscess. Malignant tumors of the oral cavity and pharynx. Neck lumps.
  • Laryngology: Anatomy and physiology of the larynx. Acute laryngitis. Acute epiglottitis. Acute laryngotracheobronchitis. Foreign bodies in the larynx, trachea, oesophagus. Laryngeal cancer. Paralysis of the laryngeal muscles. Tracheotomy. Complications of tracheotomy.
  • Elements of anatomy and neck surgery: Muscles of neck, fascias, neck triangles, lymphatic system, allocation of neck lymph nodes, benign diseases of the neck, metastatic neck lymphadenopathy, surgical lymph node clearance of the neck.
