Dr Helen Kourea is Assistant Professor of Pathology at University of Patras (UP) Medical School, Patras, Greece. She studied Medicine in the same University, graduating in 1990. She was trained in Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) in U.S.A (Residency training: University of Connecticut, 1991-1992 and Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT, USA, 1992-1995). She had a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY (1995-1996) and a Hematopathology Fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA (1996-1997). She received the title of American Board of Pathology in 1996 and the title of Specialist in Pathology in Greece in 1997. She was awarded a PhD degree by the UP in 2002 and was elected in the position of Lecturer in Pathology in UP Medical School in 2004. She was elected as Assistant Professor in Pathology in 2009 and received tenure in this position in 2012. Dr Kourea participates in the teaching of Anatomic Pathology of Medical School students and in the Integrated Teaching Courses of the UP teaching curriculum. She participates in the teaching of Pathology Residents and provides diagnostic work in the Department of Pathology in the UP Hospital, in General Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology specimens. Her research interest focuses on mechanisms of carcinogenesis in tumors of breast, female genital system, lung, peripheral nervous system and hematopoietic system. She supervises 2 PhD dissertations and is a member of the 3- and 7-member advisory committees in 7 and 10 PhD dissertations, respectively. She has 30 full publications in international journals 2 full publications in Greek journals and 4 full publications in symposia proceedings. She has co-authored 6 book chapters, 5 of which under the auspices of World Health Organization (WHO) and participated in the Greek translation of 3 English textbooks of Anatomic Pathology.
