Summary of Curriculum Vitae

George Panayiotakis was born in Chania, Crete, in 1956 and has one child. He completed his B.Sc. studies in the Department of Physics at the University of Patras (1974-1979) and received his PhD in Medical Physics in 1986 from the Department of Medicine of the same University. During his PhD studies, he collaborated with the research institutes KCARE, London, and FAXIL, Leeds. He holds a professional license as a Medical Radiation Physicist and a license as a Medical Physicist. He has been an academic member of staff of the University of Patras since 1980. He is Professor of Medical Physics since 2004 and Chief / Scientific Director at the Medical Radiation Physics Unit of the University Hospital of Patras since 2002. His research interests lie in the field of Medical Radiation Physics and specifically medical image quality and quality assurance, quality control and dosimetry of diagnostic systems, study of phosphor materials used in medical radiation detectors, simulation of medical imaging systems using Monte Carlo techniques, as well as medical image analysis. He is the Coordinator of the Intra-university Research Network in Medical Radiation Physics-MRP. He has over 200 publications in international peer reviewed journals and also over 400 presentations in international conferences. His scientific work is internationally recognized (h-index 21). He has co-authored two books and eight book chapters (5 in English and 3 in Greek). He is a member of the editorial board of the international journals The British Journal of Radiology, World Journal of Radiology, Journal of Intelligent Learning Systems and Applications, The Open Spine Journal, The Open Orthopaedics Journal, as well as of the greek journals Hellenic Radiology, Radiation Technology and Reviews in Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics. He is a reviewer in more than 20 international scientific journals (e.g.: Medical Physics, Physics in Medicine and Biology, Applied Physics B, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, The British Journal of Radiology, European Radiology). He is a member of 7 International Scientific Societies: Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), European Society for Engineering and Medicine (ESEM), Mastology Association of Northern and Southern Mediterranean (MANOSMED), British Institute of Radiology (BIR), European Association of Radiology (EAR), European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) and of 6 Greek ones: Hellenic Physical Society, Hellenic Association of Medical Physicists, Hellenic Association for Radiation Protection, Hellenic Society of Biomedical Engineering, Hellenic Society of Mastology, Hellenic College of Radiology. He is the chairman of the Interdepartmental Course of Postgraduate Studies in Medical Physics Committee (University of Patras), member of the Interdepartmental Course of Postgraduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering Committee (University of Patras and the National Technical University of Athens), and member of the Steering Committees of the Interdepartmental Course of Postgraduate Studies in Medical Physics and the Interdepartmental Course of Postgraduate Studies in Electronics and Information Processing. Furthermore, he is an external advisor for the National Organization for Medicines, and Chairman of the five-member Committee of the National Ministry of Health for the certification of Medical Radiation Physicists.
