Summary of Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Nicholas K. Moschonas is a Professor of Medical Molecular Genetics and Director of the Laboratory of General Biology, Medical School, U. of Patras.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology (U. of  Patras, 1975) and his PhD (U. of Athens, 1979) for research work in the field of comparative developmental genetics and evolutionary biology mostly carried out at the Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology, the Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, USA. Then, as an EMBO post-doctoral long-term fellowship recipient, he joined the Gene Structure and Expression Laboratory (National Institute for Medical Research, MRC, UK) and worked in the field of human molecular genetics analysing the molecular basis of beta-thalassemia. In late 1983, he joined the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), FORTH-GR, and elected Lecturer of the Department of Biology, University of Crete (1985) keeping a joined appointment with IMBB-FORTH until 2005. In 1997, he elected Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at the U. of Crete, and, in 2004, Professor of the Medical School, U. of Patras. He was Deputy Member of the National Council for Research and Technology (2005-09) and National Delegate in EU FP7 “Cooperation-Health” Programme Committee (2006-10). His group participated in the International Human Genome Project, contributing to Chromosome 10 genomic analysis (1991-2005). He is member of the Human Genome Organization; he served as Genome Database Editor (1994-99) and appointed senior Editor (1999-02) for HC10. His research activities (76 peer-reviewed publications) are in the field of medical molecular genetics and human functional genomics.
